I currently prefer to make pattern welded material mostly for use as blade material. The reason for this is the materials I use are tool steels. Tool steel can be a problem to work with for the unfamiliar. Milling and drilling tool steel can cause problems not encountered in grinding. I expect knife-makers to understand basic heat-treatment, work-hardening and the concepts of annealing and have the appropriate tools. Experience has shown that I can't expect the same of craftspeople in other areas.
